Background of the study
The advent of digital communication has accelerated the creation and diffusion of neologisms, particularly in dynamic linguistic environments such as Nigeria. Online platforms like Facebook and Twitter serve as fertile grounds for linguistic creativity, where new words and expressions rapidly emerge and gain traction (Okoro, 2023). These neologisms reflect the adaptive nature of language, influenced by cultural trends, social interactions, and technological innovations. In Nigeria, the proliferation of online neologisms has led to a linguistic landscape where traditional vocabulary is continually augmented by innovative digital expressions (Ibrahim, 2024). This study investigates the origins, adoption, and dissemination of these neologisms, focusing on the interplay between user creativity and platform dynamics. The research explores how digital communities negotiate meaning and linguistic identity through neologism formation and what these new lexical items reveal about contemporary Nigerian culture (Chukwu, 2023). By examining cases from Facebook and Twitter, the study aims to uncover patterns and factors driving linguistic innovation, thereby contributing to the broader understanding of language evolution in the digital age (Obi, 2023).

Statement of the problem
Despite the growing interest in online neologisms, there is limited empirical research examining their formation and impact in Nigerian digital discourse. Current literature often overlooks the comparative dynamics of platforms such as Facebook and Twitter, which differ in structure and user engagement (Ibrahim, 2024). This research gap hinders the understanding of how these new lexical items influence everyday communication and cultural expression. Without systematic investigation, the processes behind neologism creation and diffusion remain inadequately explained, limiting insights into digital language evolution (Okoro, 2023). The study addresses these challenges by providing a comprehensive analysis of online neologisms in Nigerian digital discourse, thereby informing future linguistic and cultural studies (Chukwu, 2023).

Objectives of the study

  1. To identify and classify online neologisms in Nigerian digital discourse on Facebook and Twitter.
  2. To examine the processes behind the creation and adoption of these neologisms.
  3. To analyze the impact of neologisms on contemporary Nigerian communication.

Research questions

  1. What are the predominant neologisms emerging on Facebook and Twitter in Nigeria?
  2. How are these neologisms created and disseminated within digital communities?
  3. What effects do these new lexical items have on traditional language practices?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it enhances our understanding of digital language innovation in Nigeria by analyzing online neologisms. The insights will benefit linguists, educators, and digital media analysts by highlighting contemporary lexical trends and their cultural implications (Ibrahim, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study
The study focuses exclusively on online neologisms observed on Facebook and Twitter in Nigeria. It does not extend to other social media platforms or offline linguistic practices, ensuring a targeted investigation.

Definitions of terms

  • Neologisms: Newly coined words or expressions.
  • Digital Discourse: Communication that occurs in online environments.
  • Lexical Innovation: The process of creating new words.
